About this Cocktail

If you've perused my contributions to BarNotes, you've probably noticed that I am very very fond of Gin. For quite some time now I've been wanting to make a 50/50 Gin & Rye cocktail. The question for me has been, "Which gin will hold up to George Dickel and make this a drink worth talking about?"

Smalls American Dry Gin is definitely THAT gin. It is a robust gin from Oregon with cardamom, spices and citrus notes.

Which gin do you find to be that gin? Which rye?

This is a 50/50 Old Fashioned.

  • 1 oz Smalls American Dry Gin
  • 1 oz George Dickel Rye
  • Two dashes Angostura bitters
  • Two dashes Regans' Orange Bitters
  • One dash Fee Brothers Black Walnut Bitters
  • Luxardo Maraschino Cherry
  • Orange peel
  • One barspoon Demerara syrup or one sugar cube

Build in glass: sugar/syrup and bitters first. Stir until dissolved. Add one big rock and cherry. Add gin and rye. Stir until all are happily combined. Express orange peel and use as garnish.

Happy sipping!

This sounds good! I'll have to try and find an English gin that holds up so I can give it a go!

Nick let me know which English gin you use! Something heavily botanical?
