An Improved Negroni

About this Cocktail

For Chinese New Year, I decided a Negroni would be the best drink to serve* but have always felt the ratios should be updated. Here is a more modern Negroni with greater emphasis on Gin and a splash of maraschino liqueur for balance. Seasonal blood oranges provide an excellent peel for expressing.

*The citrus and bitter notes of a Negroni pair well with the heavy foods in a traditional Chinese New Year dinner and red is the color of the celebration. Sun Ye Fai Lok!

Ingredients:
  • 1.5 oz Gin (Plymouth)
  • .75 oz Campari
  • .75 oz Sweet Vermouth (M&R)
  • Two dashes Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur
  • Two dashes Orange Bitters
  • Blood Orange Peel
Preparation:

Combine gin, Campari, sweet vermouth, maraschino liqueur and bitters in shaker over ice. Stir. Pour into old fashioned glass with one big rock. Express blood orange peel and use as garnish.

An 'improved' Negroni? *spits mouthful of port all over self* Good god man that's heresy! Actually it sounds rather good...
