About this Cocktail

As unlikely as this combination of stout and Champagne sounds, David Embury explains in his 1949 book The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks, the result is “something like molasses and horse-radish. Actually, it is excellent. The champagne cuts the heavy, syrupy consistency of the stout, and the stout takes the sharp, tart edge off the champagne.
