Dr. Scola

About this Cocktail

Created by Robert Heugel of Anvil in Houston, TX and featured in the book "The American Cocktail". This drink was a tribute to the original recipe of Dr. Pepper that was bottled in Dublin, TX and to Luis Scola who played for the Houston Rockets at the time. Not long after this recipe was published, Dublin Dr. Pepper went out of production due to a trademark dispute and Luis Scola was traded by the Rockets. Oh well... The drink is still tasty just the same. Use Dr. Pepper made with real sugar if you can.

  • 1.0 oz Fernet Branca
  • 1.0 oz White Rum
  • 2 dashes Fee Bros. Old Fashion Aromatic bitters
  • Orange peel
  • 2.0 oz Dr. Pepper (up to 3.0 to taste)
  • Luxardo cherry for garnish

In a rocks glass, add bitters and Orange peel and muddle gently. Add Fernet, Rum and a large ice cube and stir a couple times. Top with Dr. Pepper and garnish with a Luxardo cherry on a cocktail pick. (I like this drink with close to 2 ounces of Dr. Pepper, but the published recipe had up to 4 ounces listed.) Eat the cherry first then enjoy the drink. Cheers!
