About this Cocktail

Made for me by my friend Alex. Originally comes from Cure on Nola.

  • 2 oz Cynar
  • 1 oz Rittenhouse Rye
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 pieces lemon peel
  • Herbsaint

Combine Cynar, Rye and Salt in mixing glass, stir to dissolve salt. Express lemon peels and drop in mixing glass. Stir with ice. Strain into an herbsaint rinsed cocktail glass. Garnish with lemon peel.

This is a fantastic cocktail. A Manhattan variation in which the Cynar combines in one ingredient the herbal complexity that you'd get from vermouth and the depth you'd get from bitters. The salt provides both texture and flavor, while also creating a pleasant heat in the back of the throat, which echoes that of the alcohol in the bonded rye. The herbsaint rinse (I used absinthe) lightens the drink (flavor-wise) and adds mystery.
