About this Cocktail

Get your Don Draper on with this classic of classics – although I think Don adds soda and bad maraschino cherries. Please don't do that.

  • 2 oz. rye whiskey
  • 1 sugar cube
  • 2 dashes angostura bitters
  • Orange peel
  • 1 dash orange bitters (optional)

In a rocks glass, add sugar, bitters and orange peel. Muddle gently until sugar is dissolved. Add whiskey and give a quick stir. Add 1 large ice cube, stir and garnish with fresh orange peel.

My go-to cocktail that no bartender should screw up.
  • Mario Santi
And far too many bartenders screw up this simplest of the king of cocktails .
  • Jeff Smith
Don't go overboard with the orange peel and orange bitters
  • Timothy E.
Great simple recipe. I replaced the sugar cube with about 3/4 teaspoon light agave. I didn't have any orange bitters but I'm curious about trying them.
  • D Stephens
Mario is so right. I don't order them out most times anymore. Not unless it's from a swanky cocktail bar where they are sure to make it right.
  • Jay Kelly
Never muddle the orange peel in my opinion. Skip the orange bitters. Smoke it if you can.
