About this Cocktail

Both the same one with scotch the other with bourbon.
Created in 1894 to honor the operetta with the same name.

  • 1.5 oz scotch - bourbon - rye whiskey
  • 1/2 oz sweet vermouth
  • 2 dashes Angostura
  • Orange or lemon zest or maraschino cherry

Pour the ingredients in a mixing glass.
Give it a quick stir to marry the flavors. Stir 20 times in a carrousel motion.
Strain over a chilled cocktail glass.
Squeeze the orange zest oils over the surface and rub around the glass edge and drop into the glass.
You may flame the orange or lemon peel over the cocktail.

The dry manhattan used dry vermouth and lemon peel as garnish.

Use lillet rouge instead of vermouth.
Use peuchards bitters instead of angostura or use both.

Stir to have the right texture, that is not over diluted, to keep it clear. When you shake you aerate the drink.
