Suffering Bastard

About this Cocktail

This is just a nice sipper with a fun history. Apparently it was concocted by Joe Scialom at the Shepherd’s Hotel in Cairo, Egypt in the late 1940s as a hangover cure. I can't recall where I first found it but any drink that is mentioned in an episode of The Venture Brothers is a winner in my book.

  • 1 oz bourbon (I like Elijah Craig 12 year)
  • 1 oz dry london gin (I like Bombay Sapphire here)
  • 1 oz fresh lime juice
  • 1 dash Angostora bitters
  • 4 oz ginger ale (avoid a sweet ginger ale like Vernors)

Fill a glass halfway with ice. If you are feeling tropical, use your favorite tiki glass. Add the first four ingredients and stir until mixed. Top with the ginger ale. Garnish with an orange slice, and mint. Kick back and enjoy a sunset.

"Where's that suffering bastard!" "I'm looking at him!" I quote it every time I slide it across the mahogany and always answered with a very quizzical look...

    I'll have to remember that!
