About this Cocktail

The earliest version of the Turf dates from around 1895 (Old Tom gin, Angostura bitters, orange bitters). A version very much like the recipe below was first documented in 1922 and is perhaps the greatest variation on the classic Martini ever devised. At least to me. David Wondrich prefers a Holland gin, sweet vermouth, and Angostura version. What does he know, anyway? (Answer: Everything.)

  • 2 oz dry gin
  • 3/4 oz dry vermouth
  • 1/4 oz maraschino
  • 1/4 tsp absinthe
  • 1 dash orange bitters

Stir with cracked ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Lemon peel garnish.

This one is right in my sweet spot.
  • Stew Ellington
    TMI, dude.
  • Brandon Herring
Made one of these last night. I'll stick with my original statement, TMI be damned! Great drink. Got more complex as I got towards the end.
  • Peter Bodenheimer
I will be drinking one of these in the next 24 hours.
  • Tom Lyberg
I like it but it has got me thinking about using some of my Watershed Bourbon Barrel Aged Gin in it.
  • Brandon Herring
Follow that thought Tom. Report back on results!
